Reusable glass or sterile disposable plastic? Compare clarity, convenience, sterilisation, durability and long-term value before choosing the right Petri dish for your workflow.
Two good options. Two very different workflows.
Petri dishes are one of the simplest pieces of laboratory equipment, but the material you choose changes how you prepare, sterilise, store and use them.
Disposable polystyrene dishes are designed for convenience and consistency. Borosilicate glass dishes are designed to be cleaned, sterilised and reused. Neither option is automatically better for every grower; the right choice depends on how often you work, how you sterilise and whether you value speed or reusability most.
Disposable Petri dishes
Sterile disposable dishes are ready to use straight from the package. For many growers, that is their biggest advantage. There is no washing, drying or glass sterilisation step before pouring agar.
Quality disposable plates also offer excellent optical clarity and consistent dimensions. Vented designs can help with gas exchange and lid handling, while individually or batch-packed sterile dishes are convenient for occasional and high-volume culture work alike.
Advantages of disposable dishes

• No washing or dish sterilisation required.
• Lightweight and easy to stack.
• Excellent clarity for observing cultures.
• Consistent dimensions and lid fit.
• Convenient when producing many plates at once.
The trade-off is that most standard polystyrene plates are intended for single use and should not be pressure sterilised like laboratory glassware.
Borosilicate glass Petri dishes
Glass Petri dishes are built around a reusable workflow. Proper borosilicate laboratory glass can tolerate repeated cleaning and suitable heat-sterilisation cycles when used correctly.
For growers who work with agar regularly, glass can be an excellent long-term option. It has a substantial laboratory feel, offers very good visibility and removes the need to continually replace the dish itself.
Advantages of glass dishes
• Reusable over many cycles.
• Suitable for appropriate heat sterilisation.
• Excellent chemical resistance.
• Solid, professional laboratory feel.
• Reduced reliance on single-use plastics.
• Potentially economical for frequent long-term use.
The trade-off is preparation time. Glass must be cleaned thoroughly, inspected for chips or damage, dried and sterilised before reuse.
Sterilisation is the biggest difference
This is where the workflows separate.
Sterile disposable polystyrene plates arrive ready for aseptic use and are discarded after use. Glass dishes become part of your sterilisation routine. They need to be cleaned properly and sterilised before each new culture cycle.
If you already run regular pressure-cooker or autoclave cycles, glass may fit naturally into your lab. If you want to open a sleeve, pour plates and get to work, sterile disposable dishes are hard to beat.
Condensation and handling
Condensation can occur in either type because it is driven mainly by temperature differences and pouring technique. Glass has greater thermal mass, so it may warm and cool differently from thin plastic. Disposable dishes cool quickly and are easy to handle in large stacks.
With either material, avoid pouring agar unnecessarily hot and allow plates to set undisturbed.
Which is more economical?
The answer depends on usage.
For occasional culture work, disposable dishes often make financial and practical sense because there is little preparation overhead. For frequent use, reusable glass can become economical over time, provided you already have an efficient cleaning and sterilisation workflow.
Breakage should also be considered. Glass lasts well when handled carefully but is not indestructible.
Which should you choose?
Choose disposable dishes if you want the fastest, simplest workflow, need sterile plates on demand, or do not want to clean and sterilise dishes between batches.
Choose glass dishes if you value reusability, already sterilise laboratory glassware, enjoy a traditional lab workflow or want to reduce your use of disposable plastics.
Many serious culture workspaces keep both. Disposable plates are useful for speed and volume; glass plates are useful for repeatable in-house workflows.
