When mixed in the soil mix, this Perlite potting mix forms spaces to allow water to freely move through the root system. People often ask whether you should use coarse perlite as opposed to medium or fine grade. Coarse perlite has the highest air porosity, so it offers the most drainage capability and ensures the plant roots can breathe well, even in water-retentive potting soil. 

Roots then draw as much water as they require without unintentional drowning. Works well when using BRF, lining the base of the tub with washed perlite and BRF cakes are placed on top of the Perlite as it retains moisture well.
